BARGEMUSIC
Since 1977 when it was founded by violinist Olga Bloom, Bargemusic has been a showcase for chamber music on the Brooklyn waterfront and become a champion of chamber music throughout the United States. Both musicians and the public enjoy chamber music in the intimate setting for which the genre was originally intended. The Barge, a 102-foot long converted barge once used by the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, offers a splendid performance space with wood paneling, a fireplace, and spectacular views of the lower Manhattan skyline along the East River. In an effort to maintain the intimacy of each concert, seating is limited to 125 persons.

BROOKLYN BRAINERY
Brooklyn Brainery is accessible, community-driven, crowdsourced education.
We host cheap classes on anything and everything. All of our course topics are dreamed up and suggested by you, and our teachers are a group of awesome people from around Brooklyn and the whole city. Anyone can teach--you just need a passion for the topic and a desire to share it with others.
Classes meet for either one, two, or three weeks, and we keep them as inexpensive as possible (something like $30 for a bunch of class sessions), because you shouldn't have to spend a paycheck to learn something new.
What we teach:
If you can make it, read it or think it, we're probably open to it. It can be crafty, foody, academic-y, whatever you'd like. And though we think kids are cool, all our classes are aimed at adults.

BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY - CENTRAL LIBRARY
Each year, more than 1.5 million people — almost the equivalent of the entire population of Brooklyn — use the Central Library. Containing more than 1.5 million books, magazines, and multimedia materials, it provides services to all ages, free Internet access throughout the building, and, since September of 1997, a Multilingual Center for non-English speakers and those interested in linguistics.
Opened on February 1, 1941, the Central Library is the major reference center for BPL’s 60-location system. The library’s notable architecture was created to resemble an open book, with the spine on Grand Army Plaza and the building’s two wings opening like pages onto Eastern Parkway and Flatbush Avenue.

BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY - RED HOOK BRANCH
An architectural gem, the original Red Hook Branch was the only Brooklyn Carnegie library to be built in Mediterranean Revival style. A fire in 1945 closed the library on Visitation Place, and the city decided to demolish rather than restore it. The branch used rented quarters until 1975 when the current 7,500 square-foot one-story brick library was built on Wolcott Street.

BROOKLYN WRITERS SPACE
The Brooklyn Writers Space was founded by playwrights Scott Adkins and Erin Courtney in 2002. Since opening, the Writers Space has served over 700 writers by providing a professional, respectful, and quiet environment for writers.
In 2007, the Brooklyn Writers Space partnered with the Brooklyn Artists Gym to establish a new kind of space. Room 58 provides everything the Writer Space does with an additional room for writers to take care of the business side of writing. In addition, the writer members share a beautiful bright 10,000 square foot loft space with the visual artist members of the Brooklyn Artists Gym.
In 2010, the Brooklyn Writers Space opened another quiet only space on Court Street to serve the writers of Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook and Boerum Hill. This space is a classic Carroll Gardens store front.
All spaces provide writers with a desk, a lamp and a chair on a first come first serve basis. Coffee is always on hand, as well as provide your own paper printing, wi-fi(if you are trying to get away from the internet we can help you with that too), storage ($30 per quarter), and kitchenette lounge areas for socializing.
Each space is unique by location and by services, the Garfield location has a roof deck with monster tomato plants, Room 58 has a HUGE bright lounge with really comfy couches, and the Court Street location has plenty of books and very comfy reading lounge. All spaces are accessible 24/7.

CHOCOLATE CHIP CHAMBER MUSIC
Chocolate Chip Chamber Music made its debut as a children’s chamber music series in May 2006. Located in the heart of Park Slope, Brooklyn, the series features professional musicians in engaging and interactive mini-concerts designed for two to six year olds. The concerts are comprised of an opening chocolate chip cookie theme song “sing-along,” and a number of very brief musical selections performed by the musicians. “Baker Bobbie” serves as the emcee and mascot, and often finds her way out of a perplexing problem with the help of the audience and the musicians. Each piece of music is introduced in such a way as to involve the listeners fully – from clapping games to movement and acting. Programs are typically tied to a particular theme such as dance or storytelling, so as to further educate and inspire children and parents. Performances end with instrument demonstrations – a hands-on experience for curious preschoolers, and a chocolate chip cookie for all in attendance.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAMS (CERT)
NYC Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are groups of community-based volunteers that undergo an intensive, 11-week training program in disaster preparedness and basic response skills. Topics include Fire Safety, Search and Rescue, and Disaster Medical Operations. After completing training, teams support their local communities by assisting with emergency education and response.
Emergency services personnel are the best equipped to respond to emergencies. However, following a catastrophic disaster, NYC CERTs can handle initial emergency recovery while they wait for professional first responders.
During non-emergency situations, NYC CERTs educate their communities on emergency preparedness.

GOWANUS ARTISTS (AGAST)
The Gowanus Artists Studio Tour (AGAST) began in 1997 as a way for fifteen artists to introduce their work to the neighborhoods surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Since then the Tour has rapidly grown in participation and stature, drawing visitors not only from all over Brooklyn, but also from Manhattan and the suburbs.
Today, the Gowanus Artists, an equal opportunity organization, includes professional, visual artists with studios in Brooklyn near the Gowanus Canal, in an area bounded by 5th Avenue, Baltic Street, Smith Street, and 10th Street. Some Gowanus Artists have established gallery representation, while others are just emerging on the art scene. As a community, we are serious about perfecting our chosen crafts and keeping our studios in the Gowanus Canal area.
We operate primarily on a volunteer basis, and depend on the artists' participation fee and the generosity of our sponsors to enable communications and organization of our event.
The annual open studio tour is held each October. This year we have 114 participating artists and expect over 2,500 visitors.

Once operated as a steel mill in the 1800′s, this 12,000-square-foot space sits beneath 50-foot cathedral ceilings with a 4,000-square-foot mezzanine overlooking the lower gallery. In 2010, Josh Young of Serett Metal retooled the space and founded Gowanus Ballroom.
The space now serves both as a metal fabrication shop that frequently opens its doors to artists and assists or teaches them to build, and as a creative exhibition space that showcases the talents of emerging artists and designers in the Brooklyn area.
Finding Us
Gowanus Ballroom is a little tricky to find if you haven’t been here before. The address is 55 9th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215. It is in Gowanus, near the under-construction Smith and 9th Street subway stop. When on 9th, you cross under the bridge and make an immediate left into the complex following the canal. We are located in the building with the large smokestack directly behind FIND furnishings. Drive all the way back through the complex parking lot and follow the signs for Serett Metal, or if you are on foot, walk down and into the complex and make your first right into the alley. You’ll see the sign for Serett Metal dead ahead, and you’ll know you’re there.

INTERFERENCE ARCHIVE
The Interference Archive is a collection of political posters, prints.
IA has used these materials in exhibitions, made them available for study to researchers, artists, activists, and designers, and presented our creative research in a variety of cultural venues (including the New Museum, Carnegie Mellon University, Brown University, Creative Time, and the US Social Forum, just to name a few). Through installations, exhibitions, public talks, and publishing, IA creates spaces in which to explore, critique, and understand the aesthetics and culture produced by both movements for social change and counter-cultural communities. In the US, there are no archives devoted specifically to these materials. The IA was founded on the belief that these ephemeral and aestethetic materials are important for understanding social history as well as contemporary cultural practices.
Artists Dara Greenwald and Josh MacPhee named their collection The Interference Archive (IA) in 2004 when they put together a collection of the paper ephemera produced by protestors at the Republican National Convention in New York to create an art installation that would put these disparate items together in one space for contemplation. The IA has built an international collection of a variety of media and art produced by both protest and counter-cultural movements.

LESBIAN HERSTORY ARCHIVES
Our Mission and Principles
From the beginning the Archives' founders developed a statement of purpose and a set of principles to guide the development of the collection. We adhere to these purposes and principles today.
Statement of Purpose: The Lesbian Herstory Archives exists to gather and preserve records of Lesbian lives and activities so that future generations will have ready access to materials relevant to their lives. The process of gathering this material will uncover and collect our herstory denied to us previously by patriarchal historians in the interests of the culture which they serve. We will be able to analyze and reevaluate the Lesbian experience; we also hope the existence of the Archives will encourage Lesbians to record their experiences in order to formulate our living herstory.
We will collect and preserve any materials that are relevant to the lives and experiences of Lesbians: books, magazine, journals, news clippings (from establishment, Feminist or lesbian media), bibliographies, photos, historical information, tapes, films, diaries, oral histories, poetry and prose, biographies, autobiographies, notices of events, posters, graphics and other memorabilia.

LITTLEFIELD
Littlefield is a performance and art space in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood nestled between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. Housed in an old, 6200-square foot warehouse dating from the 1920s, littlefield merges the Gowanus’ industrial past with a sustainable future. These elements include a landscaped interior courtyard, sound walls formed from recycled rubber tires, a bar built from salvaged bowling alley lanes, and energy supplied by wind power. Future projects include a grey-water system and a landscaped roof that will reduce littlefield’s footprint to virtually zero while providing fresh ingredients for our menu.
Coupled with an industrial/organic aesthetic is a state-of-the-art sound system designed for live music, art installations, and film screenings. The main system is based around the latest 3-way loudspeaker arrays by EAW, powered by QSC amplifiers, and digitally controlled via networked Rane processors. As an added acoustical and functional feature, a moveable partition was built to separate the performance space from the gallery/bar. When the partition is fully closed, the performance space can accommodate up to 300 people while the gallery/bar can hold up to 100. For larger performances, the partition can be moved to one side and littlefield can hold up to 400 people.

MAKEVILLE STUDIO KIDS
The creative urge to make things comes naturally to kids. Building and making bring together an irresistible combination of play, learning, and a sense of accomplishment.
How fun is this!
We get to work with some of the most creative, excited, open-minded people on the planet--kids! And we get to share our love of woodworking with these natural builders and makers who could not be happier to learn from us. There's just nothing better than the look on a kid's face saying "I made this!"
Who we are
Makeville Studio is owned and operated by Robyn Mierzwa, a long-time woodworker and mom to two daughters ages 9 and 12 who love to make stuff.

NEW YORK WRITERS COALITION
NY Writers Coalition Inc. (NYWC) provides free and low-cost creative writing workshops throughout New York City for people from groups that have been historically deprived of voice in our society. We also publish our workshop participants' writing and organize public readings of their work. Writing with others in an atmosphere of respect and acceptance, participants discover the value of their own stories, gain confidence and a stronger sense of self and become less isolated from themselves and from society. By creating a community of writers and leaders from diverse backgrounds, we galvanize the voices of the marginalized and create opportunities for all writers to connect with the larger community. NYWC's goal is to create an inclusive city, one that is aware of the diversity of voices within it and honors the lives of all of its citizens.

PORTSIDE NEW YORK
PortSide NewYork is a young, innovative non-profit organization. Our mission is to show NYC better ways to use the BlueSpace, or water part of the waterfront, and to help revitalize our home neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn while doing that.
We are based on the retired coastal oil tanker Mary A. Whalen.
We promote sustainable waterfront planning that increases use of the water. This includes fostering waterborne transportation, the greenest way to move people and goods, and providing educational, cultural, and social service programs for the community on a water theme. PortSide engages in harbor advocacy and runs an H2O Arts program that offers ship tours, talks, walks, readings, concerts, movies, and performing arts.
We are planning a home in Atlantic Basin where New York City’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) selected PortSide in 2009 to create a maritime hub and cultural center.

REEL WORKS TEEN FILMMAKING
Reel Works Teen Filmmaking is centered of the conviction that every young person has a story to tell and an important contribution to make our world. We believe that filmmaking holds within it essential disciplines of literacy, communication, creative and critical thinking, storytelling and teamwork that young people need to effectively express their unique visions. In the process they gain self-esteem, master state-of-the-art technology and are transformed from passive consumers to active creators of media. We say to teens: You have a voice. Use it!
Founded in 2001 at the Prospect Park YMCA, Reel Works is a full-time nonprofit arts organization that serves over 150 teens each year through five core programs: The Lab, The Master Class, Reel Impact, Reel Works Productions and the Summer Lab.
